Man sent by Jesus Rams Car into Parked Plane

A man who claimed to have been sent by Jesus to punish sinners rammed his car into a parked plane at an airport in southeastern Nigeria , an aviation spokesman said Thursday.

No one was hurt in the incident Wednesday and the spokesman said Nigeria had no problem with security.

The United States put Nigeria on a list of countries needing to improve security after Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was arrested on suspicion of trying to blow up a U.S.-bound airliner in December using explosives hidden in his underwear.

"There is no problem at all at our airports, no cause for alarm, as we have the necessary security on the ground," said Akin Olukunle, spokesman for the Federal Airport Authority.

He said the driver had broken through two security gates at Calabar international airport and rammed his car into the Arik Air plane before soldiers arrested him.

The suspect was heard yelling that all Nigerians were sinners and must repent or perish, a reporter who was at the airport said. The man, who is from Nigeria's southeastern state of Akwa Ibom, said he had been sent by Jesus Christ.

Authorities were questioning him in Calabar.

The crew of the plane, which had arrived from Lagos and was on its way to the capital Abuja, were not injured and no passengers were on board at the time.

"Our men rushed to the scene and evacuated crew members on board," Olukunle said. "We have beefed up security."

A bomb squad found no explosives in the car and flights continued despite the incident.

Dude, There's a Lorry In My House!

What a shock! Imagine a 21-tonne truck carrying sand in your living room!

M. Balakrishnan, a 70-year-old pensioner, and his wife, P. Saraswathy, escaped death when the truck rammed into the living room of their house along Jalan Maarof in Bangsar here yesterday.

Saraswathy said she had just entered the kitchen to prepare lunch when she heard a loud explosion that shook her two-storey corner lot house about 10am.

"I came into the living room to check and was shocked to see a huge truck there. I screamed and cried," said the former school teacher.

"I am lucky to be alive. If I had been watching television, I would have lost my life," said Saraswathy, who was still shaken over the incident.

Balakrishnan was also thankful that he had gone for a Rakan IJN Association meeting at the the National Heart Institute.

"If not for the meeting, I will be doing my daily routine of reading the newspaper in the living room," said Balakrishnan, who is the secretary of the association.

Balakrishan, City Hall’s former senior public health assistant, said he was unsure what to do now.

"My 35-year-old son stays with us. We have so many important things here and cannot leave the house," he said.

Alam Flora garbage truck driver R. Arumugam, 49, who witnessed the incident, said the truck may have developed brake failure.

"I had stopped at the traffic lights when I heard a loud screeching sound from behind and saw the truck coming fast from the Bangsar Shopping Centre direction.

"It avoided us by just a few metres and swerved into the road on our left before it rammed the house’s brick wall."

Stuck in Drain at Wangsa Maju

It was more embarrassing than painful. This teenager missed her footing and her right leg went through the steel grating of a drain in Section Two, Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur, last night.

The 18-year-old student was kept company by several passers-by, who for more than 30 minutes tried in vain to free her. In the end, firemen used a hydraulic pump to force the steel bars apart. She escaped serious injuries.

Boy gets Toilet Seat Stuck on his Head

British firefighters said on Wednesday they had come to a boy's rescue after he got a toilet seat stuck on his head.

The toddler, aged two-and-a-half, and his mother walked into a fire station in Braintree, Essex, Tuesday saying the boy had put his head through a small trainer seat for the toilet and now could not remove it.

"His mum had tried to get it over his head but couldn't budge it so she walked him down here and asked us to have a look at it and we went to work and we managed to get it off in no time," firefighter Chris Cox said.

"We simply put some dish washing liquid on his head and ears and it slid off nice as pie."

He said the boy had been "very brave" and "toddled away as happy as can be" after his ordeal ended.

Couple Caught Having Sex, Crash Car in Johor

A COUPLE caught having sex in a car tried to escape from the police but ended up being involved in a road accident in Johor.

The male driver, in his haste to outrun a police patrol car, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the back of a bus at 10pm on Tuesday.

The man, who is said to be married, suffered head injuries.

The woman, in her 20s, was found squatting in the front passenger's seat after the accident.

The naked duo refused to budge until policemen threw them their clothes which had been placed in the back seat.

They were later escorted by two police patrol cars to the hospital where the man, from Malacca, sought treatment.

French Kissing Accident

An Israeli woman accidentally bit off part of her boyfriend's tongue during a heated French kiss, an Israeli hospital that reattached the tongue said Thursday.

Nahariya Hospital said in a statement the man, injured while "passionately kissing his girlfriend," was discharged after the operation and advised to sip iced drinks and "avoid wet kisses" until the stitched wound healed.

Falling woman saved by pile of...

A Chinese woman survived a plunge from a sixth-floor balcony thanks to a convenient pile of excrement which broke her fall, local media said.

The accident happened when the woman was hanging out laundry on Monday in Nanjing, capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu, the Kuaibao tabloid said on its Web site (www.kuaibao.net).

"Workers happened to be emptying the building's septic tank, which had not been tended for a long time and had regularly blocked sewage pipes," the newspaper said.

"She probably stretched out too far and fell ... right on to a 20 cm-thick heap of excrement."

The woman suffered only slight injuries, the newspaper said.

In March, a six-year-old girl broke only her left leg when she fell six floors on to a pile of snow in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang.

A Couple Fell 60 Feet Off a Cruise Ship in Gulf of Mexico

A man and a woman fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday, but both were rescued after a four-hour search and appeared to be in good condition, a cruise line spokeswoman said.

The 22-year-old man and 20-year-old woman fell 50 to 60 feet (15 to 18 meters) from a cabin balcony, said Julie Benson, spokeswoman for Princess Cruises.

She said the cruise line did not know how they fell overboard. Their ship, Princess Cruise's Grand Princess, was about 150 miles (240 kilometers) off the coast of Galveston, Texas, at the time.

The captain turned the ship around after friends of the man and woman notified the crew at about 1:30 a.m. CDT (0630 GMT) that they had gone overboard, Benson said. The ship's crew used high-powered spotlights and rescue boats in the search. One passenger was rescued by the ship's boats at 5:30 a.m. (1030 GMT) and the other at 6 a.m. (1100 GMT), according to a statement by the cruise line.

The search was aided by the Coast Guard, said Lt. j.g. Jillian Lamb at the District 8 Command Center. A nearby cruise ship also offered assistance, she said.

The man and woman, whom the cruise line declined to name, were examined by the ship's medical staff.

"They appear to be in satisfactory condition and we hope that no further medical attention will be needed,'' Benson said.

Grand Princess was carrying 2,783 passengers on a seven-day tour of the western Caribbean.

Every 10 minutes 23 Road Users are Dying Worldwide

Every 10 minutes at least 23 road users lose their lives while another 1,000 people are seriously injured due to road accidents worldwide.

Most of the deaths occurred in developing countries, raising alarm bells that fatalities from road accidents would overtake AIDS as the leading cause of unnatural deaths by 2020.

These are among some of the startling statistics revealed during a briefing by the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to the Pahang state agencies during their stop here recently.

Among those who attended were representatives from the police, Road Transport Department, Road Safety Department, Public Works Department and the state Road Safety Council.

The iRAP briefing was conducted by technical officer Paul Van Damme of the ARRB Group.

He said iRAP had been adopted in 30 countries worldwide with Malaysia being the first in the Asian region to take up the programme.

"Presently, we are conducting pilot studies here, South Africa, Costa Rica and Chile.

"Our survey is funded by Federation Internationale Automobile (FIA) and Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM)," he said.

Van Damme said so far, AAM had allocated RM200,000 towards the purchase of the survey vehicle, equipment and other operational cost.

He said Malaysia was chosen at the request of AAM through its affiliation with FIA and the fact that the Malaysian government was very supportive of road safety measures, in addition to having a comprehensive set of data.

Road Safety Department assistant director Raymond Teoh said the survey would assess over 3,000km of roads in Peninsular Malaysia.

He said so far, the survey team had covered more than half of the journey, mostly along federal and coastal roads.

"Our next stop will be Johor and Malacca before going back to our headquarters in Putrajaya.

"The information we collected through three surveillance cameras would be analysed before a rating is given to the roads.

"A rating of four star means the road is very safe while one is the least," he said to questions from members of the press.

Teoh said the results of the survey would be made public in a special ceremony in July.

"It is up to the Government and the relevant authorities to take up the recommendations by the survey team.

"This is a good start in making Malaysian roads safer with strategic partners to complement one another," he said.

Ouch!! I Swallowed a Toothbrush!

A Hong Kong woman somehow swallowed her toothbrush but still managed to dial 999 and call for an ambulance, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The 42-year-old woman's brush with disaster happened on Tuesday morning when she slipped, jamming the offending 15-cm implement down her throat, the South China Morning Post said.

The woman was still able to call 999 without choking and request an ambulance, the paper reported.

"Paramedics obtained another 15cm-long toothbrush at her home, which she said was similar to the one she swallowed, and took it with them to the hospital," the newspaper said.

The instrument was eventually extracted with endoscopic surgery.

"The woman is now recovering and her condition is listed as stable," a hospital spokeswoman was quoted as saying.

Girl chokes to Death on Kuih at School

SHAH ALAM: A Standard Five girl choked to death on a buah melaka during recess at a school canteen here on Monday.

Buah melaka, also known as onde-onde, is a round-shaped kuih coated with shredded coconut, containing brown sugar filling.

The girl, Anis Shuhaida Amar, 11, from SK Taman Tun Dr Ismail Jaya in Bukit Jelutong, choked and collapsed about 10am.

She was rushed to the Selangor Medical Centre by a teacher but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Her father, Amar Sidik, 40, said he was at work when his wife, Salasiah Ismail, 31, informed him of the incident.

"I rushed to the hospital but the doctor there told me she had died.

"More attention should be given to pupils’ safety, especially in reacting quickly to emergency cases," he said at his home here yesterday.

He said Anis had been suffering from a sore throat for several days prior to the incident.

Salasiah said a teacher phoned her asking her to come to the hospital as Anis had fainted.

"I didn’t worry much then as I thought she may have fainted due to fatigue. However, I realised it was serious when I received the second call, saying her condition was critical. When I arrived at the hospital, she was dead."

Anis was buried at the Muslim cemetery in Section 20 on Monday.



The school’s senior assistant, Siti Rubiah Abdul Rahim, said this was the first time such an incident happened in the school, which has more than 1,300 pupils.

On whether the canteen operator would be barred from selling buah melaka, she said: "This is the school’s right. This is an administration matter between the school and the canteen operator. The media need not know."

The school lodged a police report but the family has not done so.

Nicole Kidman in a Crash during LA Movie Shoot

Nicole Kidman was taken to a hospital after the Jaguar she was in crashed early Thursday during downtown shooting of the science fiction thriller "The Invasion," police said.

Kidman, 39, was examined at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and then released a short time later. Paramedics were called to examine Kidman for injuries before she was taken to the hospital, police said.

"Nicole Kidman was in the vehicle at the time of the accident and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. She was released shortly thereafter," Warner Bros. said in a statement.

No other actors were involved in the scene at the time of the accident, the studio said.

The Jaguar was being towed by a camera rig that skidded while taking a corner and caused Kidman's car to hit a pole on West Sixth Street, police said. The actress was wearing a seat belt.

"The stunt driver apparently went off course and hit a light post at about 1 a.m.," police Officer Karen Smith said.

Eight people, including Kidman, stuntmen and cameramen, were taken to hospitals for examination and were released, Smith said. Warner Bros. said two crew members had minor injuries.

Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., also said production continued after the crash and Kidman was expected back on the set Thursday.

The Oscar-winning actress, who stars as a Washington psychiatrist who unearths the origin of an alien epidemic, was involved in a scene involving an escape from zombielike characters who are on the hood of the car.

Two Dead, 10 injured When Scaffolding Collapses at Pavillion

When we were out for lunch today at Bukit Bintang area, we were wondering why the contractors were gathering outside Pavillion KL. There were also two police cars there as well. I guess this is why!

KUALA LUMPUR: Two died and 10 others were injured when a scaffolding they were standing on collapsed at a construction site in Jalan Bukit Bintang around noon today.

Four of those injured are in critical condition.

The two dead workers were a Malaysian and Myanmar.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Zulkarnain bin Abdul Rahman, who was at the scene of the incident, said the two died when they construction material fell onto their heads after they landed on the ground.

The injured workers were sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The workers were standing on a platform on the metal scaffolding about 15m above the ground when it collapsed.
